Exam Policy

Caution!

Our rating system is currently being revised. Please understand there might be some inaccurate and/or outdated information visible whilst we are updating our systems.
In case of doubt, contact the Training Department for clarification.

1 - GENERAL PROCEDURE

  • If a member is ready for an exam (same procedure for pilots and controllers), s/he has to go to www.ivao.aero/training/exam/ .

  • There, s/he has got information about the upgrading system and can access the status page.

  • His/her status is checked to determine if s/he can apply for an exam according to her/his current rating and logged hours on IVAN as a controller or a pilot (caution, only controller logged hours are taken into account for controller exams and only pilot logged hours are taken into account for pilot exams).

  • If OK, s/he can start the exam : 45 minutes to answer 20 questions (40 questions for IvAc/IvAp exams, not yet in use 08/2007) IN ENGLISH and submit the exam.

  • S3/C1/C2/C3 & Captain/FC/SC/SFC theorical exam are multiple choice exams and will be validated by our system.
  • All questions are based on ICAO / JAR OPS Rules & Regulations if not stated otherwise in the question.

Any answer written in other language than English will be mark "0" by validators even if otherwise marked by evaluators.

Also what we want to check is the member's ATC/pilot knowledge, not his/her computer abilities. Subsequently, any copy-and-paste-from-tutorial answer will be marked 0/5. Any exam with more than 3 answers of that type will be marked 0/100. Please, understand we prefer you to write things with your own words, even if in bad English, we don't care about grammar, syntax or orthography.

  • The exam is then registered into the "Exam (pending for evaluation)" list.

  • It will be assigned to a -TC, -TAC, -TA, -DIR or -ADIR when TD/TAD activates the auto-assignment process.

AUTO-ASSIGNMENT :
All exams (theoretical and practical) are auto-assigned to the division the member belongs to (when any).
An exam is auto-assigned :

  • first to the TC, TAC, or TAs of the member's division (when any), if their rating is equal or higher than the member's that requested the test.

  • second to the DIR or ADIR of the member's division (when any) if no TC/TAC is available or if their rating is equal to or higher than the member's that requested the test.

When a member has no division or when this member has a rating higher than those of his/her DIR, ADIR, TC or TAC, the exam will be UNASSIGNED. Then TD/TAD will assign it manually to somebody from another division who has a rating equal or higher than the member's rating.
In the future, each staff member who is assigned some exams will automatically receive a message that says "Check your assignment list" or something like that.
Also,  a column in the 'by staff' list now shows the number of exams an evaluator has been assigned.

Remark : since some exams will be processed manually for the cases described above, staff members may be assigned exams for members who do not belong to their division. This should be rare but may happen.

  • The TC, TAC, DIR or ADIR corrects (evaluates) the exam.

EXAM EVALUATION :
The exams are evaluated by DIRs, ADIRs, TCs or TACs  by giving a mark from 0 to 5 for each question
(max mark is 20 x 5 = 100, pass mark is 75/100) and submit the evaluation.

Evaluators, you can check your assignment list at www.ivao.aero/training/exam/admin then click MY EXAMINER ASSIGNMENTS.

If necessary, some exams can be evaluated by TD/TAD. However, they usually concentrate on validations.

  • After evaluation, the exam is registered into the "Exams (pending for validation)" list.

  • As soon as TD/TAD activates the auto-assign process again, all exams pending for validations will be shared between them and the TA (Training Advisors).

  • One of them validates (by confirming marks and/or modifying them if needed) and submits the exam.

  • The exam is now registered as SUCCESS or FAILED.

  • The applicant will be able to take it again (if failed) or take the next (if success) according to general rules indicated on www.ivao.aero/training/exam/ .

    Remark 1 :
Everything starts with the first exam about IvAc or IvAp to be taken at level 1, 2 or 3. Required to reach level 4.
Then, if level 4 OK, level 5 (C1 - Flight Capt) exam, then level 6 exam etc...

2 - SPECIFIC PROCEDURES FOR REAL ATC AND PILOTS - RATING TRANSFER:

The procedure for a rating transfer from real-world licences or or rating on other networks may be viewed at the page Rating Transfer.

3 - DIVISIONS EXAMS:

  • IVAO exams are the minimum required for upgrade. Everybody, anywhere in the world has to take and pass them to upgrade. However, according to local specifications, some divisions may require their members to pass DIV exams (which level and requirements could be at least equal to or higher than IVAO's). IVAO-US and IVAO-GR have their own exams for instance.

  • Upgrade is efficient when the applicant is successful to BOTH :

    • theoretical IVAO-HQ exam (HQ online system) and practical exam (handled at division level).

    • DIV theoretical exam if any (applicant will be notified by DIV if requested standards higher than IVAO-HQ's).

4 - EXAM STATUS :

When checking his/her exam status at www.ivao.aero/training/exam/status.asp by clicking on the exam number then the SUBMIT button, each member can see :

  • a summery of the exam including any comments the examiner and validator made

  • in case the exam was marked 50 or higher the member can also see each question

  • his/her answers

  • his/her mark (from 0 to 5) for each question

  • the comments field, including the proper reference files from the Instruction Pack.

Thus the member can see which questions he/she failed and know what he/she has to work to find the correct answers. Not all lessons and manuals are available yet but the Instruction Pack is divided in several files dealing with one subject at once. So when a member sees where he/she failed, he/she should be able to define which files have to be studied into the i-Pack available at www.ivao.aero/training/tutorials/Ipack.htm

Giving access to questions, member's answers, references and marks should help finding the proper training materials.

5 - PRACTICAL EXAMS :

As indicated above, with an auto-assignment to the member's division, each member should be assigned an examiner of his/her own division and be able to conduct his/her practical exam on the airfield/center s/he is usually activating or flying. The case of members whose exam is not being assigned automatically will be studied individually by Training Dept's staff.

Examiners must log-on with a call sign representing their examiner status, e.g. LFPG_X_APP ( _X_ = Examiner), if the required ATC position is already taken by a controller the examiner may log-on as observer. e.g. LFGP_X_OBS and maintain the _X_ within the call sign.

Practical exams may be assigned to non-staff members having at least a rating of I1 or CC by the responsible examiner who then will report the exam results on the respective webpage. Any score given in a practical exam has to be explained in detail in the remarks field of the exam, so validators and members can reconstruct the reason for a given score.

6 - EFFECTIVE UPGRADE :

Ratings are automatically updated when BOTH theoretical and practical exams have been validated.
